The lake was established about ten years ago. It is located on a working sheep farm on St Patrick's Plains, at an elevation of around 950 metres. Its area is around 25 hectares.
The lake boast a shoreside cabin with BBQ facilities, an open fire (for any particularly chilly days) and a deck overlooking the lake. There's even a toilet.
All the fish in Herne are wild Tasmanian brown trout. The original fish were introduced from the nearby Great Lake and have subsequently spawned in the two feeder streams.
The lake offers wet fly fishing early and late in the season, margin fishing when the water levels are up and fantastic dry fly sessions when the insects are hatching. The wading conditions are excellent.
